System

The system is initially all hosted on one central server. In the future, we can split it to reflect the on-the-ground system. Each group or region could have its own server. That can be a VM box anywhere. (See Friendship VPS) The system can be a peer-to-peer network, similar to Diaspora. We will look for ways to disperse the centralized parts, in contrast to the normal business practices. Any data required can be kept by all nodes, as with Usenet.

The task of the system will be to collate data that’s relevant to the particular logged in user and to present it in a pleasant and coherent manner. For the public site, if this is needed, the same thing applies. The system collates the blogs, group pages, accounts, videos and so on, and presents them according to the needs of the user. The user can control the parameters. The domain directsponsor.org would have subdomains which are assignable to whatever server that particular project is using.

Any node could leave the Direct Sponsor domain and ‘go it alone’ using their own server, and could set up completely separate networks. They would need the consent of their donors, obviously.

This is an overview of the projects using directsponsor.net (see below). Its purpose is to explain the system to people who are new to it, and then to direct them towards the actual projects. The other areas link back to it as a reference, but it is not intended to overshadow the projects themselves.

Each project has either its own domain or a subdomain of directsponsor.net and here is where all the blogs are. It also holds all the forums and any other networking tools the projects might need. Accounts are also served from here.
