AWS1 (old)

Redundant now, keeping for reference.

My own prior lesson was when Google decided to make a new sites system and force-migrated all my stuff to the new one, losing both data and features in the move. Hence this wiki that uses wordpress which is open source and free.

  • You’re taking a lot of time to learn someone’s proprietary system that is different to everyone else’s.
  • If they do something stupid (not unlikely) or just something that renders their platform no longer useful, you’ll have to learn another system and then undo all your work and transfer everything over to the new one.
  • It’s better to just learn open and free systems and use them.

Below are my immediate reasons for abandoning AWS.

  • free tier but this only lasts a year and then automatically starts billing
  • AWS has a Kafkaesque user interface anyway.
  • Nothing I tried to do worked.
  • Cockpit failed to work and their help video showed a edit button that did not exist in my screen.
  • Gave me a weird way to log in with ssh keys, not just ssh ubuntu@p-address This then failed to work at all the following day.
  • No doubt this was all my fault but it doesn’t happen anything like so often with open source stuff.

Speedtests

Unable to install speedtest the normal way because appaarently its no longer compatible with ubuntu 20.04 (even though it clearly says it is… ) so I installed python3-pip and then was able to install it but it gives no url for thenice pretty graphic.

Cockpit

Installed and started Cockpit but it times out. Added port 9090 to firewall rules but still nothing. Found a video on aws site showing how to allow ports in their interface but where in the video there is an edit button, in my interface there is not. So AWS not really worth any more effort I think.
